Prolapse Pessaries

A vaginal pessary is a removable device placed into the vagina. Pessaries often are an effective tool for managing pelvic organ prolapse without the need for surgery . They are designed to support areas of pelvic organ prolapse. There are a variety of pessaries available, made of rubber, plastic, or silicone-based material. Pessaries come in different sizes, individualized for each patient and fitted carefully. These can be fitted very quickly in an outpatient clinic. They work very well for many women without causing discomfort. Some General Practitioners provide this service but it is now more commonly done through a Gynaecologist. Some women instead of opting for surgery choose a prolapse support pessary as it is less invasive and less complicated.

Why is a Pessary used?

How is a pessary put in place?

You won’t need an anaesthetic because it’s usually not too uncomfortable.This can be fitted in an outpatient consultatuion easily. Because pessaries come in a number of sizes and shapes, you may need to try a few before you find one that is comfortable and provides the right support.

How long can I use a pessary for?

Pessaries are a safe long-term treatment for prolapse but they do need to be changed every 4 to 6 months.
